Converus Releases EyeDetect 5.0 with New Suitability Tests to Boost Reliability
The Two Advanced Suitability Tests — Pupil Light Reflex and Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus — Help Customers Identify Examinee Impairments or Intoxication Before Testing

EyeDetect 5.0 now includes enhanced pre-test screening to help ensure every test is conducted under ideal conditions.
LEHI, Utah – Aug. 21, 2025 – Converus, a provider of credibility assessment solutions, has released EyeDetect 5.0. It features two new suitability tests — the Pupil Light Reflex (PLR) and Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) tests — designed to flag potential physical impairments and intoxication before a test begins.
“These two new tests ensure every credibility assessment is conducted under the right conditions — meaning you can verify the suitability of an individual at that point in time before proceeding with the credibility assessment test,” said Converus President and CEO Todd Mickelsen. “It’s another step forward in delivering smarter, more dependable technology.”
Mickelsen describes the PLR test as a streamlined, more accurate version of the previous PLR diagnostic test. It helps spot neurological, optical, or substance-induced issues that could skew results. Meanwhile, the HGN test detects signs of intoxication related to alcohol or drug use by measuring involuntary eye movement.
Traditional HGN tests used in law enforcement are manually administered field sobriety tests. Officers observe the voluntary and involuntary movements of the eyes (such as jerking) as a person follows a stimulus (pen or light). However, this process is subjective and reliant on the officer’s visual observation and judgment.
“Our HGN test detects involuntary eye behavior with precision, removing the potential human bias and variability of the current law enforcement test,” added Mickelsen. “If someone is impaired — even slightly — you need to know that. These new tests identify those issues instantly.”
Both PLR and HGN are now automatically enabled for EyeDetect customers for diagnostic protocols (DLC and HDLC) and can be manually enabled or set as the default for others. If an examinee fails either test, the test proctor is alerted and can stop the credibility assessment test from proceeding. The system will mark the test report as “Indeterminate” due to a failed PLR or HGN test to preserve the integrity of the test outcome.
EyeDetect is currently used by over 100 U.S. law enforcement agencies and 1,000 organizations worldwide. Tests take 15 to 30 minutes and results are ready within 5 minutes. In just a few hours, examiners can be trained and certified to administer tests.
