Tech Co. Says its Advanced Lie Detector Will Save U.S. Gov’t $29B Annually
Utah Tech Company Says DOGE Can Save Federal Agencies $29 Billion Annually by Replacing or Supplementing Polygraph with a Faster, More Affordable, AI-Based Lie Detection Technology Called EyeDetect

With EyeDetect six times faster than polygraph and about 1/30 the per test cost, Converus says it can save the U.S. government $29 billion annually if used for security clearances, immigration enforcement, personnel vetting, and to identify those who have leaked confidential information — like the planned ICE raids.
LEHI, Utah – April 9, 2024 – If Elon Musk and DOGE want to reduce the U.S. government’s spending and the $37 trillion deficit, a Utah tech company says it can find $29 billion annual savings simply by looking into people’s eyes.
Those savings, according to Converus, could be achieved by replacing or supplementing traditional vetting tools — such as the polygraph — with an automated, AI-based lie detection technology called EyeDetect. The government currently uses the polygraph for personnel vetting, security clearances, immigration enforcement, and to identify those who leak confidential information — like the planned ICE raids.
“Elon Musk and DOGE want to cut federal spending and make the government run more efficiently — and EyeDetect checks these boxes because it assesses credibility faster, more accurately, and at a fraction of the cost,” said Converus CEO Todd Mickelsen. “After using the traditional lie detector for over 80 years, EyeDetect is now the new way to detect deception. It’s already transforming government screening programs worldwide in more than 60 countries.”
Mickelsen says EyeDetect is often favored over polygraph tests outside the United States especially as an initial screening test because it’s automated, only takes 30 minutes — six times faster than polygraph — and is about 1/30 the cost. Converus’ website lists 12 peer-reviewed studies scientifically validating the technology with up to 91% accuracy.
“Since 2018, the U.S. State Department has facilitated over 50,000 EyeDetect tests across various countries. These tests have been instrumental in enhancing the hiring process and periodic vetting of local law enforcement partners, advancing their mission against drug trafficking and human trafficking,” said Mickelsen, who’s previously demonstrated and/or discussed EyeDetect with officials from various agencies within the Department of Defense, National Security Agency, Department of Homeland Security, FBI, Secret Service and others, as well as several members of Congress.
Unlike a polygraph, EyeDetect doesn’t require invasive body sensors or a highly trained examiner for administration. Instead, it uses computer-based testing and algorithms to measure changes in involuntary eye behavior — including eye movement, pupil dilation and other ocular metrics — to detect deception as the subject answers a series of true/false questions.
EyeDetect can complement polygraph by being run first in a multi-step process to identify potential issues. Individuals flagged by EyeDetect then undergo polygraph exams for deeper investigation. When both tests indicate deception on the same issue, there’s a 99% probability of lying.
Mickelsen says he’s run the numbers and his company’s technology would streamline government operations and cut costs in four areas: security clearances by $11 billion, immigration enforcement by $9 billion, personnel vetting by $6 billion, and leak prevention by $3 billion.
“EyeDetect empowers agencies to modernize how they evaluate trustworthiness with far more efficiency,” Mickelsen said.
EyeDetect, released in 2014, is used by more than 1,000 customers worldwide, including over 100 U.S. law enforcement agencies. For more information: converus.com

About Converus®
Converus provides scientifically validated credibility assessment technologies. VerifEye® is the world’s first mobile app to help organizations or individuals accurately verify the truth about a person — including background, identity, creditworthiness and claims — in about 10 minutes. EyeDetect®, which detects deception by measuring involuntary eye behavior, is a fast, accurate, affordable, noncontact, scalable, and fully automated option to polygraph. EyeDetect+ is the world’s first automated polygraph, making the testing process impartial, accurate, and less intrusive (than a traditional polygraph). It assesses credibility by monitoring and recording ocular activity plus physiological activity similar to a traditional polygraph. Customers worldwide use the EyeDetect product line for screening and investigations to help protect countries, corporations and communities from corruption, crime and threats.
