Renowned Polygraph Expert Dr. John Kircher Joins Converus Staff
Dr. Kircher is credited as the co-inventor of the computerized polygraph and the first ocular-motor deception test (ODT) — EyeDetect. He recently retired from the University of Utah to join Converus.
Dr. John Kircher, one of the inventors of EyeDetect, retired from his University of Utah teaching position to join the Converus staff.
LEHI, Utah – June 26, 2019 – Dr. John Kircher, widely recognized in government and industry as one of the world’s leading experts in deception detection, recently retired from his teaching position in the department of Educational Psychology at the University of Utah to join Converus.
His role as Chief Scientist on the Converus Science Team will remain unchanged.
“More and more credibility assessment experts are accepting EyeDetect as another valid tool for detecting deception,” said Kircher. “Moving my office to the Converus headquarters will help me interact more with other members of the Converus team as well as existing and potential customers.”
In 1991, Kircher and his colleague, Dr. David Raskin, developed the software for the first computerized field polygraph system — which is still in use today. But in 2002, he and college, Dr. Doug Hacker, conceived the idea for the world’s first ocular-motor deception test (ODT), now called EyeDetect. Hacker and Raskin are also Converus Science Team members.
Kircher continues to discover and invent new capabilities. His most recent is the discovery and release of the new MCT (Multi-issue Comparison Test) protocol for EyeDetect, which was released last month.
“Dr. Kircher’s innovative contributions to the credibility assessment industry are remarkable,” said Converus President and CEO Todd Mickelsen. “A substantial part of his legacy will be the role he played in inventing EyeDetect — the first scientifically validated lie detection technology to come to the market since the polygraph was invented nearly 100 years ago.”
Dr. Kircher has published more than 90 scientific publications and technical reports in the field of psychophysiological detection of deception. He’s also served as a consultant on deception detection to the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, National Science Foundation, National Research Council, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and numerous state and local police departments. Dr. Kircher earned his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Utah.
