EyeDetect for Investigations Wins Utah Innovation Award
Called a “game-changer” in the lie detection industry, EyeDetect’s ability to now do investigative tests with a 90 percent accuracy earned it a first-place award in the Enterprise Software, Cloud and Big Data category.
LEHI, Utah – Oct. 11, 2019 – Converus “EyeDetect for Investigations” was 1 of 10 innovations announced Oct. 10 as winners in the 17th annual Utah Innovation Awards at the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City. EyeDetect placed first in the “Enterprise Software, Cloud and Big Data” category. More than 300 attended this event.
A committee of approximately 65 professionals from private industry, government and higher education evaluated and voted on program finalists and winners. The more than 100 nominations were put through a rigorous evaluation process during which committee members evaluated each innovation against a wide range of criteria addressing elements such as novelty, market need, market disruption and potential/current economic impact.
Converus released its investigative version of the EyeDetect test to the credibility assessment market last January. It uses a Directed Lie Comparison (DLC) test technique, which is commonly used in criminal investigations or civil cases. This allows law enforcement, private investigators and others to use EyeDetect in such situations as sexual assault, murder, sexual abuse of a child, spousal abuse, parole or treatment violations, or infidelity. It’s also designed for defense or prosecuting attorneys to use to determine the credibility of their clients.
An initial field study shows this 15-minute, computer-based, true/false test is 90 percent accurate.
“We’re elated to receive this award for what’s truly a game-changing innovation for the lie detection industry,” said Converus President and CEO Todd Mickelsen. “We already have numerous case studies that prove its value to law enforcement, departments of corrections, and others.”
Some of the EyeDetect successes in conducting investigations include helping recover $25,000 worth of stolen jewelry, proving a suspect accused of stealing a pistol and shotgun from a family friend was guilty, exonerating a professional athlete accused of sexual assault, and testing sex solicitation crime suspects arrested in a sting operation supervised by the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
EyeDetect is the world’s first nonintrusive, scientifically validated lie detection technology that accurately detects deception by analyzing eye and other behaviors. Results are available within 5 minutes. It’s currently used by more than 500 customers in 40 countries in 40 different languages.
The 17th annual Utah Innovation Awards, presented by Stoel Rives LLP and Silicon Slopes, is the first statewide program of its kind that recognizes innovations and the Utah companies that create them. The program is sponsored by Xact Data Discovery, Kiln., Cornerstone, Chase Busath Films, The Governor’s Office of Economic Development, USTAR and BioUtah. The program receives support from the Association of Corporate Growth, Manufacturing Extension Partnership, MountainWest Capital Network, VentureCapital.org, and the Women Tech Council.
