Accomplished Polygraph, Forensics Expert Joins Converus Advisory Board
Darryl Bullens, who has worked in polygraph since 2001, went from skeptic to believer in Converus’ EyeDetect technology after meeting with the Converus Science Team.
LEHI, Utah – March 17, 2017 – Polygraph examiners continue to embrace Converus’ credibility assessment technology, EyeDetect. Today, Darryl Bullens, polygraph examiner, forensic investigator, and former president of the California Association of Polygraph Examiners, joined the Converus Advisory Board.
Bullens replaces Mark Handler, who Converus hired as its director of professional services last August. Other advisory board members are Don Krapohl, a former special assistant to the chief at the National Center for Credibility Assessment, and Charles Honts, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Boise State University and a well-respected polygraph countermeasure expert.
“Don and Dr. Honts are icons in the polygraph world,” said Bullens. “For them to back EyeDetect is significant.”
Part of Bullens’ responsibility will be to help Converus better align with polygraph examiners, a market segment that has played an important role in the company’s growth. Converus now has many polygraph examiners worldwide using EyeDetect as an additional credibility assessment tool.
However, some polygraph examiners are hesitant to consider new technology in this decades-old industry. Even Bullens was initially opposed to EyeDetect and didn’t believe that deception could be accurately determined by measuring eye behavior. In January, after reading all the research on EyeDetect, he personally met with the Converus Science Team in Salt Lake City.
“EyeDetect was initially regarded as a potential threat to polygraph, so I met with the science team with the intent on proving the technology couldn’t possibly work,” said Bullens. “I left very impressed with their research. I made the switch in just a few months.”
As a result, Bullens intends to promote EyeDetect with other examiners, providing the research and his own validation of the science behind EyeDetect.
Bullens has worked in polygraph since 2001. Before that he was a special agent for the Virginia State Police and a state trooper for the Tennessee Highway Patrol. He currently owns San Diego-based Forensic Technologies. His company conducts polygraphs and digital forensic investigations for governmental agencies, attorneys and private citizens. In addition, he’s regularly utilized as an expert in both state and federal courts. Bullens has conducted more than 8,000 criminal/governmental polygraph examinations.
“To have someone with the credentials of Darryl join our team is just another validation of our EyeDetect technology,” said Converus President and CEO Todd Mickelsen.
Bullens is confident his background in product development and product design will help Converus enhance EyeDetect to the end consumer.
“The future for EyeDetect is wide open. It’s just an outstanding technology,” said Bullens. “I believe it has a very good chance of meeting the Frye and Daubert tests, which would make EyeDetect permissible in courts. That’s a huge game-changer.”
