The Alarming Truth about Employee Theft
Employee theft takes a shocking toll on U.S. businesses. Research shows that about 7% of annual revenues are lost to theft or fraud. Shocking news stories of fraud and employee theft can damage the reputation of a company and cause irreversible damage. In fact, about 33% of all business bankruptcies can be attributed to employee theft.
A recent story shows just how much harm a single dishonest employee can cause an organization.
Casino Theft
On October 15th, 2018, Christomy Christalin, 22, was arrested from his job as a cash operations worker at the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. His employers were tipped off to the crime when they saw a surveillance video of him leaning into a kiosk that dispenses cash for patrons of the casino. This same machine was $4,600 short.
What the Cameras Saw
Surveillance video also showed Christalin carrying a bulging moneybag and moving cash between the seats of his car in the parking garage. Later, when confronted by detectives, Christalin warned the detectives that the huge sum of money in his car was from his own gambling winnings. However, this theory seemed highly unlikely as the amount stashed away in his car matched up to how much was missing from this department.
Speaking of the case, police reported that surveillance video was pervasive in this casino. The amount of evidence found in video surveillance was key to charging Christalin with the crime. However, in a lot of industries, using video surveillance is not as practical or expected. Is there still a way to monitor employee behavior and hire honest employees?
