ExxonMobil is creating legal turmoil as the company questions why state legislatures are questioning company ethics. Exxon Mobil has been given permission to have their lawyers question the attorneys general of New York and Massachusetts. This approach to the legal system has the potential to “turn the legal system upside down” because companies with enough monetary resources will be able to file lawsuits that hinder law enforcement procedures used to help the public

State prosecutors are concerned that ExxonMobil is disregarding the negative impacts they have on the environment, and Maura Healey, Massachusetts’ attorney general, has been investigating the issue. To counteract the investigation, ExxonMobil filed a lawsuit to stop Healey’s investigations. A Texas Federal Judge’s order has recently given permission to investigate Healey’s case, and the goal is to stop Healey’s investigation completely. Such practices have the potential to foster legal fraud in large companies because they will have the ability to stop investigations against their company practices.
