Converus’ Automated Polygraph Wins 1st Place at 2022 Utah Innovation Awards
EyeDetect+ was chosen the winner in the commercial software category as a breakthrough innovation to change the status quo in the lie detection industry.
LEHI, Utah – July 26, 2022 – Amid stiff competition in the commercial software category, EyeDetect+ — the world’s first automated polygraph — took first place at the 2022 Utah Innovation Awards program held June 30 at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
Utah Business, in partnership with Stoel Rives, sponsored this event recognizing Utah’s community of innovators. Nominees in this program undergo a strict evaluation process by peers and leaders from the state’s business, civic, and academic communities. Pioneering innovations — whether products, services or processes — are judged on their novelty, market need, economic impact, and disruption of the status quo.
“This reconfirms our automated polygraph has drastically changed the lie detection technology that has been used the past 100 years,” said Converus President and CEO Todd Mickelsen. “There were multi-billion-dollar companies in this competition, and for a startup like us to win says a lot for our company.”
After 100 years with the traditional polygraph, first as an analog machine and then later the computerized version in 1991, EyeDetect+ debuted in 2021. It measures the same physiological changes as the traditional polygraph, but offers these five key differentiators:
- Improved accuracy – According to the American Polygraph Association’s Meta-Analytic Review (2011), polygraph screening tests have an average accuracy of 85%. EyeDetect+ is 91% accurate.
- Increased examinee comfort – The uncomfortable blood pressure cuff is replaced with small sensors attached to the wrists. Plus, testing time is about 45 minutes — reducing examinee fatigue. That’s less than half that of a standard polygraph.
- 100% unbiased – EyeDetect+ makes the polygraph examiner’s job easier by automating the testing and scoring process, eliminating potential human bias and standardizing the process. It cannot discriminate based on a person’s age, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Test data are collected and then analyzed by an advanced algorithm.
Reduced cost – An EyeDetect+ test costs less than a standard polygraph.
- Ocular data included – In addition to the polygraph channels, the ocular measurements from the standard EyeDetect test are included.
Nominees in the program were evaluated by leaders within Utah’s business and academic communities, who vote to select the finalists and award winners. Each category had winners, finalists, and honorable mentions.

Converus provides scientifically validated credibility assessment technologies. EyeDetect®, which detects deception by measuring involuntary eye behavior, is a fast, accurate, affordable, noncontact, scalable, and fully automated option to polygraph. EyeDetect+ is the world’s first automated polygraph, making the testing process impartial, accurate, and less intrusive (than a traditional polygraph). It assesses credibility by monitoring and recording ocular activity plus physiological activity similar to a traditional polygraph. Customers worldwide use the EyeDetect product line for screening and investigations to help protect countries, corporations and communities from corruption, crime and threats.
