EyeDetect, by Converus, a Finalist in the 14th Annual Utah Innovation Awards
EyeDetect, invented by scientists from the University of Utah, is the world’s first lie detection technology that monitors involuntary eye behavior to detect deception. EyeDetect was one of three technology products named as Finalists in the crowded category of “Enterprise Software, Cloud and Big Data.”
SALT LAKE CITY – March 30, 2016 – EyeDetect, a new lie detection technology by Lehi-based Converus, is one of the 16 innovations named a finalist in the 14th annual Utah Innovation Awards, presented by Stoel Rives LLP and the Utah Technology Council. Product category winners will be announced, while finalists and honorable mention recipients will be honored, at a May 11 awards luncheon at the Hilton Salt Lake City Center.
This statewide program, the first of its kind and sponsored by Webb Audio Visual Communication, Utah Business Magazine, KUER 90.1, USTAR, ViaWest, Lone Peak Productions, STEM Utah Coalition, Grant Thornton and GoEngineer is designed to recognize innovations and the Utah companies that created them.
A committee of more than 80 experts from Utah’s private industry, government and academic communities voted on winners and finalists in each of the program’s eight categories:
-
Clean Technology and Energy
- Computer Hardware/Electrical Devices
- Consumer Software
- Enterprise Software, Cloud and Big Data
- Life Science – Biotech
- Life Science – Medical Device
- Mechanical Systems/Chemicals/Manufacturing
- Outdoor and Consumer Products
EyeDetect is in the “Enterprise Software, Cloud and Big Data” category, along with two other finalists: Blyncsy by Blyncsy and DataSphere by Primary Data. The Selection Committee votes were tallied by the accounting firm and Platinum Sponsor, Grant Thornton.
“To be a finalist in the 2016 Utah Innovation Awards is a great honor,” said Converus CEO Todd Mickelsen. “Our technology EyeDetect is changing the way the world detects deception, and is certainly deserving of this recognition. Organizations such as the Mexican Department of Agriculture, Colombian Military School, and the Salt Lake City Police Department are already using EyeDetect to detect deception in their organizations.”
EyeDetect uses an infrared camera to monitor involuntary eye behavior to detect deception while a person answers true/false questions on a computer screen. The test takes 30 minutes and provides a “truthful” or “deceptive” score within 10 minutes. Field tests show EyeDetect is 85 percent accurate. When used in conjunction with the polygraph, and when both tests have the same result, the confidence outcome may reach as high as 99 percent, says Mickelsen.
After the concept for EyeDetect was conceived in 2002, a team of five scientists from the University of Utah spent more than 13 years fine-tuning this new ocular-motor based lie detection technology. Two of the scientists, Drs. David Raskin and John Kircher, are also credited with inventing the computerized polygraph.
“This is the first breakthrough in effectively uncovering lies since the polygraph was invented nearly 100 years ago,” add Mickelsen. “That certainly qualifies EyeDetect as an innovation.”
