Uber is under fire for insufficient background checks of their drivers.
“Trust takes years to build, seconds to break, and forever to repair.” (Source Unknown) Right now, the ride-sharing company Uber understands this adage better than anyone.
Uber is in the middle of a PR nightmare. First, a driver in Delhi was arrested after charges surfaced that he raped a passenger. Second, the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco are both suing Uber for “making misleading statements and breaking California law.” In addition, Portland, Oregon filed a suit against Uber for launching without the city’s permission, and Spain and Thailand both ordered Uber to cease operations. Finally, France passed a law effective January 1 banning Uber in the country.
The lawsuits say Uber doesn’t properly conduct a background investigation before hiring drivers. Nor do they require a fingerprint check. This allows drivers an opportunity to falsify their identities. Not only does Uber conduct poor background investigations, but its executives also put out misleading information after allowing convicted criminals to become Uber drivers. In light of these events, Uber is now altering the way it conducts business.
Uber Repents… But Will the Changes Be Enough?
To prevent future attacks and assuage those who fear for their safety riding in an Uber taxi, the company is improving its background checks by including various methods, including biometric scans. Although these scans work great in identifying an individual, they do not reveal what the individual has done in the past.
For example, if an Uber driver has assaulted someone in the past, but was never caught or prosecuted, biometric scans would have no way of knowing this, and Uber could end up hiring a criminal without realizing it.
