Background Checks 101
In the job hiring process, most companies have some sort of screening procedure to help them determine if job applicants will be a good fit for their company. Most companies will run a background check on job applicants just to make sure they are being in truthful with the information they’ve provided and that nothing will hinder their ability to complete future job responsibilities. Many job applicants today get worried at the prospect of a background check— they worry what the report will reveal about them. Some applicants even refuse to allow the company to conduct a background check. The only problem with this is that those applicants who refuse to be checked will not be considered for a job. So, do you submit to a background check and risk the possibility of your past hindering you from getting a job or do you look elsewhere for jobs that don’t require such a check?
Two Terrifying Words
Don’t let the words “background check” scare you. When we hear them, we often envision a private investigator peeking into the deep recesses of our lives. However, a background check is simply a quick scan of basic personal information that match up with the requirements of the employer at the time of scanning. It allows for a look into a person’s criminal history. Many people confuse background checks with credit background checks where the scans dig into the applicant’s finances and credit history. Employers still require these types of checks for job applicants to ensure the integrity of their companies.
It’s in the Past
Background checks flag anything and everything—warnings, misdemeanors, felonies, etc.—that have occurred in the lifetime of an applicant. So what happens to those who have a criminal background but have corrected their ways? It seems unfair to those who have committed crimes but no longer do so to be branded a criminal. There is a need for a simple and effective way to screen applicants to check their current behavioral patterns and not just their past activity. By incorporating a lie detection test in the job screening process, employers can determine if applicants are currently involved in illegal activities. EyeDetect is a lie detection technology that eliminates the prejudice that can occur when background check results only outline a job applicant’s past by demonstrating if applicants are presently involved in the wrong dealings.
