Lying about Tax Funds
By Sean Dame, Marketing —
The amount of taxes paid per year by most Americans is 10–39 percent of their income. Is it any surprise that Americans’ emotions toward paying taxes are not always pleasant? In some respects, however, taxes aren’t such a bad thing since they help pay for things like public schools, infrastructure, and the military. But how would you feel knowing your taxes were being used dishonestly? Or that your hard-earned money wasn’t being spent correctly by the politicians you had voted into office?
Misallocation of Taxpayer Funds
For the first time, a federal crime has been pinned on a communications consultant for mixing campaign funds with office accounts. You might be wondering what the significance of this is. Since this is the first time someone has pleaded guilty to such allegations, suspicions are being raised over how often this type of crime goes unreported. It makes some wonder who else is incorrectly allocating tax money for campaign or personal use.
In 2008, the House Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) was put in place to investigate certain allegations made against employees and lawmakers. A reputable debate coach was hired by Republican candidates; they paid him $43,000 using taxpayer dollars instead of campaign funds. After months of investigation, charges never fully developed, and the candidates’ lawyer claimed that they never improperly used office resources. It was only until investigators interviewed the debate coach that the truth came to light; he knowingly sought to hide the truth of the crime to minimize his role in the dishonest transaction.
Reveal Lies through the Eyes
How can lie detection software help prevent tax money from being misused? Those who are involved in the allocation of money process can be screened regularly to make sure they aren’t involved in theft. EyeDetect can be used as a non-intrusive tool that can perform regular tests on employees that will help the government catch fraud and keep employees from doing anything dishonest.
