It’s All in the Eyes
The notion that people who lie always look to the right when lying has been debunked.

We’ve all heard it before. You can catch a liar by watching where their eyes go. The rumor is that if someone glances up and to the left it means they are telling the truth. Glance to the upper right? We’ve got a liar on our hands. In 2012, researchers set out to determine if eye direction was a legitimate indicator of honesty. Once completed, the research made this theory exactly what it is —- a myth.
Researchers conducted a wide variety of tests. In one experiment, researchers watched closely the eye movements of 32 study participants as they told a mix of truths and lies. The participants were just as likely to glance upward and to the right and upward and to the left, no matter if they were lying or telling the truth. The other experiments proved the same results. No significant correlation between the direction of glances and honesty.
These studies took place in 2012, almost 8 years ago. Still today, many claim that you can tell if someone’s lying by the direction their eyes move. It’s time to dispel the rumors once and for all.
