Insurance Fraud: Occurring Inside and Outside of Companies
By Joshlin Sheridan, Marketing —
We often hear of cases of people falsifying claims in order to receive insurance money. Consider, for example, the 21-year veteran of the San Antonio Fire Department who was arrested in July. He claimed that his car had been stolen, when in reality he had someone drive it to Mexico to collect the insurance money (source). Or consider the recent case of a doctor who has been sentenced to 5 years in prison for defrauding insurance companies (source).
However, how often do we consider cases of insurance fraud occurring within the company itself?
Internal Insurance Fraud
On February 5th, a former insurance agent was arrested on charges of fraud and second-degree theft. Who was the culprit? The Iowa Insurance Division’s Fraud Bureau revealed it to be 42-year-old Cora Lea Harrington. Reports say that she altered financial documents to claim insurance money for herself (source). Sounds shocking right? Unfortunately, cases of employees falsifying documents for personal gain occur more often than we might think.
These cases bring scandal to the companies involved and hurt the morale of other employees within the company, and of course, can cause extreme financial damage! How can insurance companies and other businesses be sure that they are hiring honest employees?
An Old Method and a New Solution
Traditionally, some companies have used employee integrity testing to screen potential and current employees for honesty. These tests prove troublesome, though, because people self-report and can falsify their answers to match expectations.
Unlike traditional integrity tests, IntegrityDetectTM analyzes implicit associations using advanced algorithms. This integrity assessment test can be taken on a mobile device in under 6 minutes and is over 80% accurate in identifying problems with past behavior, making it 16% to 27% more accurate than traditional integrity tests. This innovative solution can be valuable when screening job applicants as well as monitoring ongoing employee behavior.
Could IntegrityDetectTM be a viable solution for your business in preventing fraud and corruption?
