Facial recognition technology is becoming more prevalent around the world. It can be used to unlock screen phones, to make online purchases and even to prevent public toilet paper theft! This technology has recently caught a lot of media attention for its use by Chinese police at the Zhengzhou East Railway Station.
A New Solution for an Old Problem
Zhengzhou East Railway Station is one of the busiest stations in China. In fact, during the Lunar New Year holiday, there were almost four million people who traveled through the station. With so many travelers, the age-long issue of identity verification is bound to pop up. Since the beginning of the Chinese New Year, police have caught seven fugitives and identified 26 people traveling with someone else’s ID. This railway station is the first to enhance their police force by equipping their officers with facial-recognition glasses.
The Specs about the Glasses
The facial recognition glasses can allegedly detect faces from a database of 10,000 criminal suspects in a matter of seconds. This technology can improve police surveillance and identity verification through saving the precious time that it would normally take for a police officer to apprehend a subject based on an identity suspicion. However, these glasses are also controversial because some have pointed out that human rights defenders and ethnic minorities might be singled out for profiling with the new technology. Despite these concerns, the hype around facial-recognition glasses continues to grow and time will tell the impact this may have on police forces worldwide.
Alternative Technology
The market demand for identity verification services and technology is increasing in order to ensure the safety of citizens and consumers. Online based services, such as financial institutions or dating websites, need to verify customer identity in a quick and accurate way. There is a solution. This can all be done through a web-based or mobile app technology called IdentityDetect™.
